Cartoon Guide to the Environment-Chapters 1 & 2

After reading Chapters 1 & 2 in the Cartoon Guide, answer the
following questions and you must reply to one other person's post
about Question 1.
1) According to the Gaia theory, "whenever an abiotic condition begins
to get out of hand life responds in some way that pulls the conditions
back under control."
 (A) How do humans contribute to the abiotic conditions getting "out
of hand"?
 (B) What are some specific solutions to the issues/problems that are
created by humans? (Give solutions to the issues/problems that you
presented in part (A))
2) How are the ideas of "homeostasis", "gaia theory" and "gaia
hypothesis" related?

  1. 1. A. One way that humans contribute to the abiotic conditions getting out of hand would be using too much fossil fuels. When we take too much the earth doesn’t produce fossil fuels fast enough for the rate at which we use them at. Or we cut down too much trees. When we cut down trees it messes up weather patterns and also hurts ourselves. It hurts ourselves because the trees, or any plants, produce oxygen and other nutrients that we need to sustain ourselves.
    B. A solution would be to not use as much fossil fuels as we are using now, or to simply find a substitute for the fossil fuels that we could use instead. We could also stop cutting down trees, or for every one tree that we cut down plant three more. This way we can sustain ourselves as well as the coming generations.

    2. Homeostasis is the idea that the feedback loops are stabilizing the Earth, as opposed to hurting them. The Gaia theory can be interpreted as that the homeostasis is the reason for the Gaia theory working (the idea that when an abiotic condition gets out of hand that it will restore itself). The Gaia hypothesis can be related to this because it says that the world is interconnected. This is true because the homeostasis shows how the different elements of the Earth work together to sustain itself when things get out of hand.

  2. 1a. Us as humans contribute to the abiotic factors getting out of hand by adding more factories which cause pollution to enter the air. We also cut down trees which can cause weather changes and erosion problems. Another thing we do is take more fossil fuels and as of today we are having trouble replacing the fossil fuels.

1b.We can fix the problems we contribute by lowering our use of the materials or try to make the effects of the materials we use more efficient and green when we dispose of them. Also we could try and limit the amount of pollution by cutting down on the products that we don’t need but we have to burn to break the down. To fix the erosion we could limit the amount we cut down. Also if we have to continue to cut the trees we could spread out the area we cut in. One time of the year we cut down in one area but then we move and cut down somewhere else. As for the fossil fuels we should lose our use or make another substitute for them. We need to savor our resources or else we will run out for future generations.

    2. The three ideas are related because they all talk and support the idea that earth and it many resources are all affected and that they will always turn around and go back up, but soon they will drop again. That also shows that they all agree that earth and its elements will continue to drop and then recover because they will be affected by outside sources, such as humans.

  4. Ema, on number one how you put in the fact that cutting down trees will affect the weather. Your answer was good and you supported it with evidence. I also liked how you I also liked how you tied the three concepts together. You stated it in a way that was simple and straight to the point but it really helped me understand why they tied together. I also liked your idea of when you cut down a tree you should plant three more, that seems like a really good plan that would be work

  5. Selina I like that you put pollution from factories in your explanation for number one I wouldn't have thought of that. It showed me another contributing factor that affects the environment. I also like how you did give a solution to the problem.

  6. To emaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

What about recycling? Couldn't we recycle paper products to be remade into paper products again? And how about biofuel or used vegetable frying oil or even algae instead of fossil fuels! Check out the "Fuel-Movie" Website!

  7. In addition to the ways humans affect the abiotic factors of the environment that Selina mentioned in her first question, human interference in the phosphorus cycle through fertilizer runoff, also contributes to abiotic factors getting out of hand.
