Asian Carp....Great Lakes Invaders.........Discuss! Due 1/20/12

Happy MLK Day! In reading Chapter 11, here is an article right up our alley! So read about the Asian Carp in the Great Lakes & tell me what you think?

Time Magazine Article-Asian Carp in the Great Lakes? This Means War!

So here's your question, what would you do or suggest if you were:
(a) an aquatic environmental scientist
(b) Governor of Michigan
(c) President Obama

  1. A) As an environmental scientist, I would probably suggest the creation of some physical barrier to supplement the existing electric defense. The current electric system is probably subject to power outages, and may not be a strong enough way to prevent the spread of the carp. As an environmental scientist who cares more about the environment than the economic effects on Chicago, I would suggest to close the Chicago canal locks and seal off the path to the great lakes. I would also look to encourage such events as the Redneck Fishing Tournament, which helps to lower the high carp population. Encouraging the fishing of carp farther south is taking a more preemptive strategy, and would be ecologically beneficial.

  2. B) As Governor of Michigan, I would be less inclined to think as much about the economic effects that shutting the Chicago canal locks would have. I would be more concerned with maintaining the value of the Great Lakes. I would probably push for the safest course of action, which would be to cut off the Great Lakes from the Mississippi River, and the Carp would be unable to travel to the Great Lakes by the Mississippi.

  3. a) If I was an enviromental scientists I would try and cut off their route an direct them it a controlled area. I would create the cut off by putting in some kind of barrier that let the water go through but would be a wall to the carp. Like Jerry said I would have a hunting tournament that would also cause the popultaion to decrese and stablize.
    b) If I was governor of Michigan I would create a system that would remove the carp from the area. I think it would be cheaper than building a new wall. I would direct them with a cheap net and then move them to an isolated lake that is far from the Mississippi River.
    c) If I was president Obama I probably wouldnt pay much attention to this because I would have more important things to deal with. I would only put a little effort toward this problem. I would probably only give ideas such as relocation, or diversion. I would then leave it to the governor.

  4. C) If I were President Obama, I would probably not put much focus on this single environmental issue. With the many issues that exist in our country, this is but a minor one. However, if for some reason this was brought to my attention, I would try definitely take into concern the economic effects it would have on Chicago. Considering that I (Barack Obama) was the Illinois senator before becoming President, I would probably be less likely to cut off Chicago from the Mississippi to protect the Great Lakes.
